Buy local, win big- Farmers Markets!

Buy Local!

What is a Farmers market?  Do I buy local there?

A farmers market is an open air market selling assortments of locally produced meat, dairy and produce enabling the public to buy local fresh food.  Local farmers, ranchers and home urban gardeners all purchase tables to distribute their products in their local community.  There are outdoor locations (Pine Centre Mall and 6th Ave behind the Keg in Prince George) where they set up.  Those run through the spring, summer and early fall months.  Most places operate from May to October with some communities having locations like the 6th Ave location in Prince George, which can be open all year inside a small store which has room for a small percent of the summer or new vendors.  Unfortunately in Prince George, it’s limited to Saturdays only.  Local entertainment via talented street performers can often be heard performing in the area setting a down home atmosphere and a unique, pleasant very local shopping experience at 1074 6th Ave in Prince George.

Where does the produce and meat come from?

So simple…  Grown by the community and offered to the community for consumption.  Be a team player in your community!

Why would I shop at a Farmers Market?

Traditionally, local small operation farmers and urban gardeners produce quality healthy fruit and vegetables free from commercial pesticides, hormones and chemicals.  This is still largely true in 2017 in between rare instances of retailers who deceive the buyers with resold produce purchased from commercial growers.  Most Farmers markets control their own retailers to prevent that type of behaviour from occurring, that’s always easier in communities with tight networks and efficient advisory board management.  The core retailers are all members of a local community, all local home based business owners.  Most are raising their families, putting them through educational ventures and life in your community.  They collectively help community sustainability by providing support for food banks, housing and other basic needs to service their whole community.  When you as a collective force of individuals shop there, you are working as a team within the symbiotic relationship between the collective of individual retailers and patrons supporting the whole community!

What can you purchase at a Farmers market?

Farmers markets have all sorts of fresh raw produce like Tomatoes, Radishes, Lettuce,  Potatoes, and other edible plants and prepared foods made from that produce.  There are also meat products from locally grown and grain fed animals, some are prepared into meals.  Pretty much all the food is of better quality and healthier then products coming from commercial sources.  But as stated above, you should be aware of what you are purchasing!

Do I Need An SSL Certificate For My Website?

This weekend (23 October 2017), I made into a “https” secure website, by adding an SSL Certificate.  I could, in theory, start a sales website.  Don’t worry, my valued support team providing funds so far and yet to come via my Paypal Me link and all business transactions via Paypal…  Paypal is a very secure website that I entrust to hold your credit card numbers and other financial transactions you entrust online with, not my website at present.  I will not ask you for that information personally, certainly not in my surveys as they evolve on this site.  This website will be rebranded thanks to the Bootstrap training I am taking with the IBDE Specialized Training courses so stay tuned for way more…  Updated URL (returned to HTTP) 02 December 2017

why do I want an HTTPS website?
Why would you want an https website?

But why do I want an HTTPS website to begin with?   It does mean it is secure, any submitted information such as your Email in my subscription requests is held in tight security, the best the internet can offer us sheep at the moment.  Feel free to give me as much or as little information as you wish.  I ask for none at my survey, just non identifying questions specific to the site’s layout at present.  What I heard was about Chrome browsers soon to be blocking non https websites for security concerns, that caused me to put my website to https.   I will likely revert back to the http website in the rebrand, it’s up for renewal around Christmas.  Or keep the HTTPS if it is remaining free at my server with the renewal.   If you happen to want a site and sell things, collect customer information, etc.  You will need a website with https, and the ssl’s are free here with better paid options!

Do I, will I have a login form?

Do I, will I personally collect Credit or other sensitive information?

It’s free at Bluehost!

Don’t forget to fill my survey here, to help improve my website (in complete security, thanks so much)!

Update – For 3 months, actually sometime in the next 3 months I’ll figure out how to mirage this website back to the HTTP non secure status.  Due to the fact I am on a shared hosting service (*the bargain one) for whatever reason, the RSS feed won’t find my website.  You unfortunately cannot subscribe for this period of time.  This we will overcome. 3 months are not an eternity.  My writings will build and get better, thanks to the subscribers who linked before I tried this experiment.  Onward!

Quest for a plausible direction…

Quest Path

In my quest to find a profitable or at least doable project to fund my final project for my business ideas once I focus on that part of me, I stumbled upon something my Cannabis infused brain thinks is a good idea.  In an email exchange with the Web Development team at Volunteer Prince George who officially employ me me in a volunteer position to maintain and secure their WordPress Website, I had an instant brain flash of the quest that passed though my thoughts.   It got mixed into the collective madness my brain comes up with on an average day.  This I proudly do and how my mind works.  Quite a bit of preamble will happen before I get to this idea, that’s how my mind is working.  It may be a good idea fill your coffee cup, roll a dube if you desire, I don’t mind or fill a bowl even and and enjoy this post with me.

Puff Puff Pass

I am undergoing training between March and December, 2017 from my living room.  I am a Student / Alumni of the IBDE programs hosted by Make A Change Canada as well as their Business Abilities training to develop a viable business plan…  It’s distance training, offered to Canadians coast to coast.     I have completed the IBDE training including the advanced.  It included HTML, XHTML, training on software called Adobe Dreamweaver using those program languages (that is how CareFree’s website was launched, it’s linked below) and Adobe PhotoShop.  The most recent training I got gave me knowledge of SEO tools like MOZ and WordTracker among others, basic Search Engine Optimization tricks and amplified the power of blogging on any platform and website text.  A database language called PHP was taught, which kind of works with the root of WordPress and other blog platforms.  Any static code based website uses some PHP code too, linking to specialized code storing collected customer information on a sales site perhaps but not limited to that.  WordPress was the last course in this series which is why I began these courses to begin with.  Make a Change offered me one more course to top all this up with, I am now learning about a Coding / Framework program called “Bootstrap“.  All training is accredited through Selkirk College, this campus is located in Nelson BC.

A clue, another puff

While I was on my WordPerfect course, I found some cool new plugins, one in particular was a wonderful backup program called Updraft Plus which has a scheduler built in, free.  If you have a WordPress Blog, add it to your collection here!  That link downloads a zip file.  It can be found in the link above as well from WordPress Plugins. If if you have no idea about downloading and installing a plugin, you can contact me or click here for simple instructions.  If you have no website, consider Bluehost then contact me to set it up….  Updates have issues concerning time spent updating and can slow your site down.  Only run a few from trusted suppliers for best site performance.  This Plugin was highly recommend, had a recent update listed and had the options we need in a backup program.  Simplicity has my dollar and the needs of those I manage and it was even free exceeding that.

Ah Ha Puff

I installed it to my collection of Plugins, sent an email to Volunteer Prince George that included instructions to set up a backup location local to their Google Drive.  As far as I can see on their dashboard, it is now working perfectly as I was able to fine tune it on my last visit there.  I then realized I did not need to go back to Volunteer Prince George’s Dashboard to do anything but updates and ensure there were no broken links.  That would happen once a week under the old plugin we used.  Plus, it did not delete old backups.  All that happened when I got to it.  Now, most of that happens automatically.  I do updates after noticing they are needed on my website then do a visual look at Google Analytics and examine the links with other plugins they have.  I then visit the other dashboards I manage where BackDraft is installed.  This was an inspirational moment in my Cannabis infused brain, most of those plugins are running on my website…

Puff Puff

I do this for a few other sites, all volunteer.    One that’s live right now is for the Carefree Transportation Society of Prince George. That site also has a WordPress blog behind it on a subdomain.  They manage our local fleet of HandyDart Buses for BC Transit. I am their Treasurer on the board.   Another one I manage, the Prince George “Save The Dome” Society’s.  That one is on a domain that costs less then 10 bucks a month, on a month to month option.    Right now, it’s being discussed due to changes in Dome Management,  it may go down or it will change soon…  Stay tuned for developments as a plan is made…  They need the website lol perhaps they’ll get it here.  It is a better option then the present demand on the Society.  Where I work, the Handy Circle Resources Society  has a website and a WordPress Blog (with a writer who I will be instructing in the world of Blogging) attached At the moment I have nothing to do with either end of that website other than advising the designer (at the moment…)

About WordPress

WordPress can be used as stand alone website as in Volunteer Prince George’s and this one I’m writing on now.  It also can be hosted on a subdomain if the server’s C-panel like Carefree’s and Handy Circle’s offer it.  Bluehost does, buy that one if you have to.  Or it can even be downloaded from and install it on the domain or sub of your choice if it isn’t available.  Both Carefree and Handy Circle’s websites are set up on their TELUS Accounts that handle the rest of their communication services, WordPress was included with that server.  We need to hire a blog writer on Carefree’s site for that blog.  Do you know a little about transportation issues of people with disabilities?  Are you a parton of those services?  You don’t necessarily have to reside in Prince George but you should be very familiar to the type of service they provide, door to door service for persons with a disability and seniors as part of Public Transit.

The Plan!!!

I will do this service for non-profit societies who want a web presence, organized support self help groups for micro communities within my local area of Northern British Columbia with the updates and WordPress Training.  I have briefly approached the Roller Dome, I’ll try to get away Monday to talk to Handy Circle.  It’s a great tool to bring awareness to your cause.  Guiding you on the best plugins to use and keeping them updated is key to its power.  If you have a website already that needs some SEO work or you want to host a website for your community, I will help you decide what your best options to fit your goals and long term budgets.  We’ll stay connected as you learn.  I just kind of rambled that at a Boutique facilitated by a Non-Profit society the other day like I did for the Roller Dome contact I had a “Walk-N-Roll Meetings” with.  Like their facebook page here and expect them to have a Blog soon!

I’ll always encourage you to purchase your own domain for a long term and if you’re local to me, I’ll give a live presentation to your “Design Team” free about using WordPress, creating a Blog and how it can help your cause.  For other’s I’ll create a subdomain here (linked after) full of SEO tricks and tips and you can view and learn from your location, totally free of charge.  I will try to steer potential development teams towards Make a Change Canada too.    I’ll give you the basic tools for wordpress and keep them secure with updates.  I’ll find & fix your broken links on WordPress.  Those tidbits are what burns bloggers time, affects your SEO and you can continue to do what you do best, promoting your affairs.  If your site makes an income and that is increased with my efforts, I will ask for 10%.   I will also do this service for your business, with some conditions and flat fees attached as I learn that part of business.

Power Mobility Safe Travel-be seen

What is a Power Mobility Device?

Power Mobility devices are the electric mobility devices used by people with challenges with their legs.  Some call persons using them “Electric Pedestrians”.  The mobility could be impaired by age, illness or injury.  It includes Electric Wheelchairs and 3-4 wheeled Electric Scooters of several speeds which are limited by design to not exceed 25kph.  Most mobility devices use by people with a walking challenge are limited by design to 10kph and are considered Pedestrians in North America.  In British Columbia, riding a “pedestrian class device” you are following direction taught by concerned parents walking kids to school and amplified by guidelines set out by ICBC.

What exactly are Pedestrian  guidelines?

In most North American Communities there are no pedestrian “rules cut into stone”.  Parents teach their children to walk against the traffic and stay out of the path of vehicles.  Agencies of the National Government adopt guidelines based on the teachings of perhaps their parents and that’s promoted by provincial forces, reinforced by the collective teachings of their parents and life in general.  Individual communities and regional districts can set and enforce unique bylaws concerning local pedestrian travel.   Pedestrians and traffic have separate zones in all communities.  In many communities, sidewalks are the pedestrian safe zones but in all communities there are areas where no sidewalks exist or are in disrepair, not accessible and can’t be used by everyone.  When pedestrians, both footed and wheeled, share the road surface with vehicular traffic they do so facing the traffic.  They cannot be on a provincial or national highway outside of the confines of a community.    When traveling in a non-protected bike lane (common in all areas of a community, may not be marked), leave room between the oncoming traffic on your right and allow any oncoming bikes and faster than 10kph scooters (traveling with the traffic) to pass on your left, safely out of the traffic path.  In the case of a range of parked cars, pass with them close on your left, as you feel confident with any passing traffic.  If you see a bike approaching before you start, wait for them to pass.  If you are passing the row of cars and see a bike approaching, duck between the next park car and the one ahead, wait then proceed once they pass if traffic oncoming.  We can all share the road.  Electric Pedestrians in the City of Victoria BC will have their own protected lane apparently, separated from the bikes and traffic.  Lets all travel safe, someday this will be included in all community transportation designs!

Are there advantages to ownership?  Disadvantages?  Where do people get them from?

Parking:  Free, everywhere, indoor and outdoor if needed

Fuel costs: None.  It’s electric.

Security:  As good as your personal security. Many models have an actual key and you can put tracking devices on the device and insurances to feel as safe as you need.  Ideally you live in a residence where it can be parked inside in a heated secure location like your living room, plugged into the wall in complete safety as per your comfort level at home.

Insurance:  Not required on Mobility devices up to the 30kph, 2, 3 and 4 wheeled recreational devices

Regulation, licencing:  None on these devices

Special bonuses:  You will never have to worry about a locating a parking spot or getting a speeding ticket while riding one.

Neutral thoughts:

Charge time; Varies, 4~6 hrs average time if battery extremely low.  Many places (rental, leases, accessible workplaces, public plugs, diners coffee shops, hotel rooms home perhaps) can provide free electricity for an all day or multiple day rolling charge. Travel charge distance can be influenced by maintenance and environmental factors.  The batteries are very expensive and can be ruined by draining them too low.  Purchase a long term warranty if using the device for exclusive affordable local travel outside of where you happen to hang your hat.

Yes disadvantages exist.  99% of the time you have a painful disabling illness or injury or perhaps looking at your twilight years without a driver’s licence and thinking it’s an advantage.  Well, that might not be considered a disadvantage, other than the fact you had to take a loss in life to enjoy it.  Youth is wasted on the young is a collective thought.  Your housing may be affected, you might not be able to host the instrument of your new found mobility and freedom safely within a sheltered secure warm location.  A vehicle to transport it may be an expensive adaptation or upgrade when you want to go on vacation, even just to bring it to accessible intercity transportation venues like airports and train stations.

Where can a person get a mobility device?

Anyone with a Credit card can purchase one of these devices from a number of international suppliers like “1-800-Wheelchair“.  This is unfortunate.  For personal safety, these devices can be dangerous if not respected in use and maintained seasonally by professional service people.  Some come with unexpected power and speeds.  Maintenance is very expensive, as is the device itself.  Local service and warranties are a very important part of ownership and safety.

Most persons affected by an injury, illness or age will have access to an Occupational Therapist.  No mater what resources they have to fund the purchase of a device, an OT will provide the best creditable recommendations towards their patient’s safety and device tolerances.  That should satisfy personal standards of safety too.  More importantly to some, it should satisfy family, contacts and external funding source concerns.  Locally in Northern BC, Medichair Northern BC and PG Surg Med will not issue a device without the recommendation of an Occupational Therapist or another qualified medial professional.

A word about backlinks…

Even if you know nothing about Search Engine Optimization, you should realize it is a good thing when you have a website, perhaps a blog,  that attracts attention across other websites and helps more visitors come to you at your blog to provide you a view, perhaps a customer.  You talking about me and sharing my link to your blog will get your link perhaps in my sidebar or footer, long as you let me know, as well as being sent to my page as a comment from your website if done right.  Help me, I’ll help you, we will help your customers better.  I’ll provide you some linking text, all keyword rich and I hope you’ll give me one with your keyword rich text. Orrrrr, you can always contact me from here, directly.  Sending Email best contact if you’re serious.  Leave a phone message, send a text first  & bring Cannabis if yelling from across the street!

Small Business solutions and inspiration

What’s this post about?

These are Online Business ideas for people who want to begin a small business like me.  Having just completed the IBDE program through Make A Change Canada, I sit in transition for a week I think due to an upgrade to a previous course begin date not directly after the WordPress course I just finished.  I’m also sitting on this website host for the next 5 years.  It’s Saturday of a Thanksgiving Weekend 2017 as I am writing this, when I inquired on a launch date on Friday Morning, I was told info would be sent Tuesday.  Meh.  OK back to other studies with my other educational trip…

I took the Business Abilities (BA) program back to back with this last series of IBDE courses that I began in June of 2017.  The BA course runs till about December.  In it I found I need to have some study in what kind of business I feel would be best suited for.  I began a month or 2 back on the second part of that course but got distracted by the PHP course I took.    Having returned to it today after being distracted by the last 2 courses, I recalled I needed to have a basic idea of what I wanted to do, for the business plan I am to develop.    Having this website, I think it would be best looking in this area for what I can use these unlimited sub domains for that I got from BlueHost!

Online Business

Online businesses are diverse in nature, from posting reviews on a website and attracting lots of eyes with basic search engine optimization and good writing styles  to Drop Shipping and some combination of things…  Most are considered “small business”.  Or, I could hold a lot of stock on hand, sell both live pick up, local (regional) delivery and mail order sales from the website.  Smile lots and keep going to work in the mornings till late at night dealing with live customers, stocking challenges and the online stuff.  Meh.  If I did that, I would open a Cannabis Dispensary instead of just building a website for them, perhaps on a sub domain or their own website from BlueHost!  If I’m going to be working outside of home, that’s the only job I want to do.  If I have to hire myself full time once I build capitol advising and building your website, showing you how to update and maintain it, I will!
